Hey!! What's the story?

How do you manage to keep writing through the tough times?

Writing is hard enough, but when things are no going well it can be really tough. Any advice and tips on how to keep writing when the going gets really tough?

I think it's important to have a writing routine through the good times. When things get tough, you're more likely to be ready to lean on your writing and not just to put down the pen.

I'm actually the opposite though. If I am content and happy, I write less. Stress and sadness helps immensely and I'm not sure why...!

Writing is balm for my soul when things are bad. I say that from a space that comes on the other side of a tough period; if it wasn't for the various writing prompts I with which I occupy my time, I would be in a depression I believe.

I always keep a notepad with me so that even when I don't have access to my computer or my iPad I can still write when I want to.

I felt pressured in to leaving my job this week last year (it's for the better in the long run, so I'm glad I left) and as such was unemployed until the October. It was pretty low at times as I was also ill.

I made myself write something even if it was just a sentence every day, and also regardless of how I was feeling it had to be a positive story (now I'm back on track I write darker, broodier work).

I also have a really good writing group from my class at uni, so we each feed off each other and if we have ideas that don't work for us, but would be great for someone else's style then we share it, and so that really helps to think that your friends are thinking of you even in terms of what to write.

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Premonition

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde…
