Calling the Midnight Man (Second Halloween Contest Story)

Posted on October 12, 2013 at 17:06 6 Comments

After twenty-two knocks, Natalie’s knuckles came to rest on the door when the first chime of midnight sounded from the antique grandfather clock.  With a sly smile of excitement, she opened the door, blew out the candles, and slammed the door closed again.

“Okay? So, what now?” asked Shelby, unimpressed.

“Now, we light the candles again and wait for him to appear.”

“And he’ll be mine, not yours?” she asked, though it sounded more like an order.

"Late Night Caller" (Halloween Contest-299 words)

Late Night Caller

The solid thud against the wall jerked Laney from a dream and sent her heart into a wild beating within her ears. Wide-eyed and breathless, she searched the darkness of her bedroom for signs of an intruder.

Within a few seconds, intermittent moans and grunts twisted with the wailing of straining metal, and instantly she knew what, or rather who had woken her. That damn woman who called…

Who Has Control?

After an hour of battling defiant rage, I left her sulking on her bed with a slam of the door.

Her father and I had caught her red-handed in a lie…again.  The punishment:  one week of no cell phone, a four-day sentence increase for the repeated offense.

Her father had to work late…again.  Thus, I was left to tread into enemy territory alone…again.

Aside from…

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde…
