Godforsaken (Flash500 - 496 words)

The last light had gone out.  Those who had survived the latest assault huddled together in the old church.  The sanctified stone that had proved no defence at least gave them some shelter on this, the longest of nights.  When the pale winter sun had finally slipped beyond the horizon, they had all made their way there in answer to some invisible summons, drawn by a promise of safety that did not exist.  They were on their own.The sound of screaming and fists hammering on the door stilled their…See More

Safe to Knock (Flash500 - 499 words)

“You don’t want to go in there, mate.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“She’s a monster.”

The postman carried a parcel that needed signing for.  He walked quickly up the garden path, dropped the package and returned to my side.

“You didn’t knock,” I…

The Career Plan (Flash 500 - 498 words)

“Hey, Mikey.  What do you want to be when you grow up?”

“I want to be a ghost, Mummy,” he had said.

“Why?” she had laughed.

“’Cos then I can be invisible and make people jump.  Boo!”

He had told his playfellows at school the same thing and they too…

One Man Went to Mow

Posted on June 9, 2014 at 19:34 0 Comments

With shears glinting, he went to mow

He went to mow a meadow

In a field of russet, blonde and red

He went to mow a meadow

Of tresses fine and tangle-weaved

He threshed the walking meadow

Cut and reaped the fallen strands…

Okay, I know that there are about 3 instances where you'd regularly use italics in fiction: showing foreign/made-up goblidigoober words, "indicating mental thoughts" and putting stress on words being…Continue

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.
