"Well, I used to be a god," he replied.

She stared at him, skeptically.

"Like a rock star?"

"Like fire and brimstone."

She leaned back from the intimate dinner table and took a drink of wine, studying him solemnly.

"It's true."

"Would people kneel at your feet and worship you?"

"What was it like?"

He thought for a moment. "Empowering. I miss… Continue

A History of Dremlad

((The story here is this: I needed a main villain for a series of short story ideas I'm working on and decided on a folktale that was known but not so overly used that I couldn't put my own spin on it.  It's not much, but I hope it's at least interesting and makes sense.  Also let me know if it feels cliche?))

Long long ago, in a place before time was measured, there lived two brothers: Sandan and Bogeyn. Sandan and Bogeyn were both given equal reign over the night land,…

Starting a writing prompts group?

For a while I've had the idea starting a writing prompts page/group but I have no idea if anyone is interested in this.

I've done a number of prompts before and in my opinion they are really helpful. Specifically one, which involved a weekly prompt where a author reviewed the works and gave her feedback. (shame it's no longer running) Not only did this improve my writing considerably I also gained numerous story ideas.

I want to do something similar but I need to know if…

How To Join The Library Beneath The Streets

So I've been working on this the past few days, and sent it to a friend. She told me unequivocally that it wasn't great and should be scrapped. Now obviously I'm biased towards my own work in that I think everything I write is shite. But I also know that the very last person you ask for an opinion about the story is the guy who wrote it. So do me a favor and read this, guys. Tell me what you think. Let me know if there is anything in here worth salvaging.

The first step is easy: buy…

See Me (Short Story By Matthew Milam)

Sarah. I'm calling you that because I don't know your name. In fact this is even crazy that I would even give a woman a name. Listen to this! I'm actually using a word like woman to describe a bitch I met at the club last night who had her thong sticking out and clearly was looking for some action after grinding up all over me.

I'm kissing you really really slow. I'm thinking, "Let the draws down, dumbass.", but my hands won't let me go there. I stop kissing Sarah and I just start…

When darkness falls

I think I'm coming out of the darkest period of depression I've had in years. Luckily, it was short lived, although it killed off any enthusiasm I had for the current WIP.

I don't write to be published. I'm far too shy to expose myself in that way, too terrified to be vulnerable and have the words ripped to shreds and dreams shattered. I write for myself. I write because I enjoy reading what I've written. I write because I love it and I love my characters and ideas. They make me feel… Continue

Remembering Crimson

She rose to her feet, creaking, brittle sounds echoing and bouncing off cold dry stone walls. A flash of memory was gone as soon as it appeared. She paused. She stepped out the doorway of the crypt, cold night air greeting her, a welcome visitor.

Another memory resurfaced, but this time lingered. It sang of stabbing, of pain, of blood staining an off-white gown, the dark crimson growing, spreading. Her hand rose, finger tracing the neat hole…

Searching for answers

In death, all things are made clear. But truth comes at a cost. His truth came in silver and crimson.

In the first cut, he saw their first meeting. He filled in the gaps with details he knew from later. The next cut started their life together. There were more gaps here, but also more connections to provide knowledge. A third cut brought him to the point where the problems began. The truth flowed more freely now.

He needed to know more, but was nearing the end of the road.… Continue

Untitled Rant

This is just a random rant, nothing more.

Where is the serenity in which to cast my sorrows, my loose threads so I may cleanse this pain? The undying glimpse of the moon as I face skyward towards my destination, the earth holding me in cold hands as if the warmth from living I once felt has melted away? This happiness eludes me, playing a game in which I cannot win. It laughs at me. I, in my sore thoughts of loss, pity myself. It is not subtle. Nothing in this world is gentle, the…

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

A Memory Resides In Soho

On the 1st August 2015 a special night had arrived for seventy-five year old Robert Harris and his seventy-two year old wife Barbara.  Robert was nattily dressed in a blue suit and Barbara looked elegant in a long flowing red and black flowery dress. They were in the heart of the…

Final Stretch for my First Project

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde hair fell over her face. Scarlet lips whispered to him,…
