Stupid! (eh no... not me :D )

I've only been writing fiction for about a year.

The post below was written at a Crime Writer's Workshop I attended a few months ago. I only went cos it was part of the official opening of a Writers' Retreat Centre I go to.

The challenge was to write the opening 150/200 words of a crime novel and the prompt was 'stormy weather'

And it WAS a challenge

So... this is my first ever piece of crime fiction - not my genre AT ALL, but I learned a lot.

Would love to…

I always seem to have so many separate pieces on the go at once!! I'm halfway through my novel (about 30,000 words) yet the second part is a struggle to get into at the moment. Ive several shorts written but as always they could benefit from further attention. The only thing in not really worried about is my poetry, i use that more as a way of letting off steam, a sort of clearing out of my head if you like.

obviously work doesn't help, finding time to sit down and get some decent writing… Continue

Wolves and Men

So I've had a story publication recently (yey!):

Its called The Men and its a werewolf story, so it is. Quite proud of this one - took a few drafts to get right and it has a killer last line I think.

For more on the inspiration and thoughts behind The Men, I've done a blog post here all about male aggression, feminism, and…

99 words about a Flash Fiction competition I'm running & judging

Flashtag are a Manchester-based writing collective of collected writers based in Manchester. I am one of them. Every year we hold a flash fiction writing competition for the Chorlton Arts Festival and we are back for our 3rd competition this year.

There is only one week left to get entries in.

The theme is Past, Present, Future and the limit is 400 words. We are in the process of getting our prize together, but it will certainly be something super. You are…

Well, I had plenty of wine at the London Book Fair Author Lounge. It was lovely to sit down at the end of each day and drink it. You had to be quick though. I'm back home now, with much to ponder on - not least this 'Author as Entrepreneur' business. A Business, that's what you're meant to be, and somehow find time for writing as well. Thank goodness for 99 word pieces, I must write another one soon.

Yesterday I pitched my first novel live to an agent, it was Sam Copeland from RCW…

A 99 word introduction

^^^^^^ That was the first of 99 words of introduction and < those were the 2nd-11th words. Not much space left.

Hello. I'm David. I write fictional things, mostly short sometimes a bit longer. I live in the glorious city of Manchester where the writing scene is currently very healthy indeed.

I have a blog; davidhartleywriter.blogspot.com - whereupon there are links to all my published works.

I write science fiction, fantasy,…

The Man In The Barren Land

Author Lounge at the London Book Fair

This is the first year there has been such a thing. Usually this is a trade event and authors apart from those specially invited haven't been that welcome. There are lots of seminars, talks and workshops for aspiring authors going on and lots of networking opportunities. It's all very invigorating and informative. Oh and yeah, they are giving out wine at the end of each day!

I didn't submit this to a @99fiction comp cos it was 100 words and Ijust didn't want to take ONE word out of it. Fussy mare :) anyway, enjoy....

Rising up inside me. I’m powerless to stop it.

I made the wrong decision. I was offered a choice and even when giving my answer, I knew I’d pick the wrong one. I always pick the wrong one.

And now… burning.

Our choices have consequences. As if I didn’t know.

You reap what you sow!

You don’t have…

Live Pitch (not this)

This is just a quick Hi and Goodbye (for now)

I'm very excited to be off to the London Book Fair tomorrow. This year for the first time they have a thing called the AuthorLounge, facilitated by AuthorRight.

Even more exciting for me I have to pitch my first novel LIVE to an agent at the LitFactor Pitch, on Wednesday morning.  I'll let you know how I get on.

Oh, and yesterday I just got back from a two-day writing course with Audrey Niffenegger, run by Random House…

Okay, I know that there are about 3 instances where you'd regularly use italics in fiction: showing foreign/made-up goblidigoober words, "indicating mental thoughts" and putting stress on words being…Continue

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

A Memory Resides In Soho

On the 1st August 2015 a special night had arrived for seventy-five year old Robert Harris and his seventy-two year old wife Barbara.  Robert was nattily dressed in a blue suit and Barbara looked elegant in a long flowing red and black flowery dress. They were in the heart of the…

Final Stretch for my First Project

Posted by Daniel Hale on November 16, 2015 at 2:41 0 Comments

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde hair fell over her face. Scarlet lips whispered to him,…
