Snippet #3 from Temporal Tome

The Tiger was perched at the back of the boat. For a large cat it didn’t seem to mind the sea spray washing over it. In fact it looked as if it was enjoying it.  The crew of the Saxon longboat had never seen a Tiger before and most of them would be happy if they never saw one again, but while it was here on their vessel they had no choice but to put up with it.

Mad Manon had given them their sailing orders after it became clear…

Demon Wings

England is full of demons, or so the papers keep saying. The government always deny it, they say demons don't exist, they're just a media invention to unsettle the masses. I didn't know what to think at first, I'd never seen a demon and neither had anyone else I know.

My husband told me not to worry about demons, even though some…

Professor Turner, Master of Invisible Geographies, was not a man to risk his life putting together a reading list for his senior students. He’d much rather risk their lives and many an Invisible Geography student has had to be rescued by a search party over the years because of the Professor’s zeal for rare manuscripts.  On this fine Botolf morning Professor Turner was looking for a book which had (with good reason he presumed) not been sought for many years, certainly…

snippet new novel

“Chrom had accepted that life was going to be hard.  He knew that being a Hero, in a world that didn’t really respect an old style Hero anymore, wasn’t the easiest career choice, but lately events and circumstances had made it almost unbearable.  And now, here in this water-sodden place, there was nothing he could do about it but wait for death.

But Death was reluctant to deal the Hero a fatal blow. It just kept on tapping him on the head with the top of…

Two More Moons

‘I’m fed up of moons. Haven’t set foot on a planet in years.’

‘There was Ceres,’ Kane says. Mars in her visor blurring her pale face red.

‘Doesn’t count.’ Why should it? It’s just as dull and dusty as this potato.

‘Keep your voice down. You’ll hurt its feelings.’

Kane has a soft spot for Ceres, or, more accurately, for the view of Jupiter from there.

We were assigned to the first manned mission to Europa, five years from now. So here we are, back on Phobos…

The First Time - VisDare #69

The First Time

She huddled in the lea of the stone angel, hiding from the wind, and she wept.

It had not been how she had imagined, nor the beautiful, peaceful moment they had promised. Not at all. It had been messy and violent and…

Sneak Preview

Excerpt from Chapter 3 of Temporal Tome

Sequel to Cosmogonic Marbles …coming soon

There is no sure-fire way of getting Botolf-almost-Oxford students into a lecture. Many methods have been and are employed, creatively shall we say, by the teaching staff of the college over the years.

The Head of Megalithic Scrutiny, for example, resorted to ambushing his prey (students) in their dorm…

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

A Memory Resides In Soho

On the 1st August 2015 a special night had arrived for seventy-five year old Robert Harris and his seventy-two year old wife Barbara.  Robert was nattily dressed in a blue suit and Barbara looked elegant in a long flowing red and black flowery dress. They were in the heart of the…

Final Stretch for my First Project

Posted by Daniel Hale on November 16, 2015 at 2:41 0 Comments

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde hair fell over her face. Scarlet lips whispered to him,…
