Roses War

Tucked deep in Roses frayed pocket, and pressed to her heart, was" the letter". It had lain there since..well since..Rose pulled the blanket tightly around her as she gathered her few, pitiful things, and shuffled out of the cold, icy doorstep. As she slipped into the icy dawn, she took the old letter out of her pocket, and squinting, tried to read it for the 40th time.So cold,so hungry! Where was she? Would this old, fading letter help her? The ink was indiscernible..only one word… Continue

Maura's Cat

Maura's cat hid deep under the covers, waiting to pounce on painted toes. Just wait, Maura, Angie thought! I'm ready! She had hidden there for what seemed like hours now! Where was Maura?! She always went to bed at this time! Angie knew this, for Maura had shared her life with Angie for at least 7 or 8 lifetimes now. This is ridiculous, Angie yowled! Well, since this is so nice, I think I'll just close my eyes and..Pounce! Suddenly a pair of arms were around her, and a soft voice said " I got… Continue

My days, now hollow, echo still the riper days of summer. I tread familiar ground, though trees that bore fruit only whisper through old leaves. I collect those anyway, and print them here and there for you to take up or discard as you like. They litter the house and are swept into corners but refuse to crumble to dust.

The Overpass

Light hides beasts, cloven demon bones. My blood swirls around rusted senses. It will be their flesh that will be torn, not mine. Revenge will be no pale memory for you to forget.  I am a knife for hire. I will wield my steel. Your essence sucked by worms. The earth will store your ghosts, compressed to this place abandoned.…

Won't You Play With Us?

I wrote this some time ago. Never really did anything with it. Not a story, not really. Just something I wrote.

It’s been a long time in the chest.

Cramped and small, the lot of us lying about on one another. We lay here, halfway to the living time from the sleeping time, dreaming of the time of life, the time of existence. We dream of the days of playtime.

Do you…

Painted Eyes

Dad would drop five of us around the corner before checking into the hotel to save on room rates. We'd sneak in, and be briefed. “If anyone asks which room you're in, you say 'I don't know'”. We had a roster to follow. Two kids, twenty minutes each to play outside. Mum would separate the mattress' and order four adult breakfasts to feed the lot of us. When room service knocked on the door, we'd hide in the bathroom until given the all clear. I loved to…

'Nine Tenths'

If you looked through the cracks in the walls of your mundane existence, you'd see me. I am a recurrence. If you caught and kept all the tears you've shed and one day drank, you'd taste me. I am their sodium sting. If you stared in this mirror longer, reached out and pressed fingertips to glassy cheek, you'd touch me. I am the ghost in your shell.

You'd never do these things.

Over the years I've dined on and dulled your senses. You're blind to the…

Future Imperfect - an ending (of sorts)

This is the third and final installment of the 'Futures' trilogy. Read the other 2 first!

...I got the job.

I know what I'm going to do. The cycle must be broken. It's gone too far.

I've aged.

"Time is telling on me," you might say.

The first time I caused my own death I'd run five blocks to make the interview. Only just got the job as well.

Skin of my teeth the company had said.

The Power of the Short Story

I thought I'd share an anecdote I just heard.  Hemingway, in an apparent effort to point out the potential impact of a short story, penned this 6-word stunner: "For sale.  Baby Shoes.  Never worn."

A Problem Shared (99 Words)

A Problem Shared

Ron had this habit of leaving you with his problems. As we sat drinking coffee he said,

“Peter, I’ve got this little problem. Wondered if you might help?”

With that he took the problem out of his pocket. It looked innocent enough but I knew it wouldn’t stay like that. Small problems have a tendency to become big problems and take over your life. I had to be firm,

“Sorry Ron, normally I’d love to help, but I’ve problems of my own,…

Quality Time

The clock on the mantle wheezes each interminable second.

The kitchen tap drips infrequently.

There's no rhythm here.

Everything's shrouded, not just you – the familiar covering of dust or doilies.

Echoes of my last visit, only it's me who’s sat motionless in the armchair.

Across the room your sightless stare takes in the patterns on the nicotine stained ceiling.

Outside, in the first rays of dawn, I hear the clink…

Lust In My blood

lust in my blood,

my blood boiling ovrer,

searing my skin,

ripping my heart from the ribs,

breaking the bone while doing so,

grabbing and squeezing it 'til it explodes,

as my hands tremble i smile,

the hurt is over,

war has begun,

lust in my blood...now where's your love?

i bleed out black blood,

that stains the inner sanctum of my "soul",

which you will never see, the death of the city within,

covered in my blood,

Turn Left at the Moon (99 words)

Driving to Mars takes 4 centuries.
Assuming there's a road. Well, a tunnel. Airtight too, you know – to hold an atmosphere? You need oxygen to run a car don't you?
A V8 would help. 6 litres and more than 400 HP. Limit speed to 100mph. Save yourself 25 years or so.
There's no road to Mars so she's running.…

If your life is exactly the same in 10 years as it is now and you're happy with that, Don't read this post...

Do you know that you can decide to do anything with your life?
Okay, no pressure there then! So where do we go from that statement? If we have the ability to decide this anything, what are we choosing to do?
Technically we should all be living our dream lives right? But let’s be honest, that would be far from practical. The reason being is that to decide something we must change…

"Hush, hush, little one, you’re not alone

I’m here, I’m here, until you stand on your own

Dream on, dream on, little warrior

Sleep, sleep, soundly in the foyer

Don’t ever be afraid

I’ll always be your aid

When your eyes shed tears

I’ll wipe them away, and heal your fears

Hush, hush, my gorgeous love

Future Not So Simple - a sequel

This is the sequel to Future Simple, last post but one.

All the tests have gone well and the zero paradox equations are holding. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirrored glass outside the facility - smart suit, clean shaven, slick haircut. Just a few short months ago I’d looked different, felt different too. Lacking confidence and doubting my own theories I’d driven to the interview on my last few dollars. I doubt I’d have done so well in it if my future self…

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

A Memory Resides In Soho

On the 1st August 2015 a special night had arrived for seventy-five year old Robert Harris and his seventy-two year old wife Barbara.  Robert was nattily dressed in a blue suit and Barbara looked elegant in a long flowing red and black flowery dress. They were in the heart of the…

Final Stretch for my First Project

Posted by Daniel Hale on November 16, 2015 at 2:41 0 Comments

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde hair fell over her face. Scarlet lips whispered to him,…
