Hey!! What's the story?

It was 20 minutes past midnight and Jon and his three friends, Richie, Danny and Jason found themselves outside The Neon Exchange nightclub, an A board sign outside its main door advertised  Friday - 80s Night and subtitled Don’t You Want Me Baby?. “Come on lets have some fun” Jon said to his friends and they ventured in.

Narrow stairs led down to a large packed room where 1980s music throbbed as they inched their way thru the throng of clubbers, many in retro 1980s clothing, towards a long ultramodern spotlit cocktail bar.

After 15 minutes drinking in a hot bustling atmosphere they agreed it was time for action and they excitedly made haste to the far end of the club were a rapidly filling multi-coloured tiled dancefloor awaited. They quickly managed to occupy its centre where Jon struck his Travolta styled pose and from there he danced foot perfect as Saturday Night Fever blasted.  He knew all the moves, dancing had always come so easy and effortlessly to him and he was soon catching admiring glances. Meanwhile Richie and Danny went on a luckless prowl whilst Jason continued shuffling awkwardly from left foot to right, and then back again.

A beautiful blonde girl wearing a red ra-ra skirt with white stockings and a black fishnet top appeared in front of Jon, she was all smiles and Jon recognised she could dance to.  She took his hand, he rolled her in to him and then out. She laughed, circle danced him and then disappeared back into the crowd.

Saturday Night Fever merged into Duran Duran which eventually gave way to A-ha as an oh so trendy DJ with spikey punk-esque yellow hair commanded his neon pod whilst perusing a Human League LP cover. Jon bent over, resting his hands on his knees,  that’s enough, I need another drink, he thought.

As Jon waited at the bar the girl in the red ra-ra skirt suddenly reappeared and stood next to him, their eyes met and she smiled. “So do you come here often?” she said, slowly drawing out each word, her parody to that old cliché. Jon caught her humour and laughed “it’s been a while” he replied, “you dance well” she said. “Well ?” he protested “I’m the best baby!” he threw her an exaggerated wink, his reply to her humour and she gave a little smile. “Who are you here with?” she asked, “those three wrinkly asses over there”, Jon pointed. She glanced over at his friends and all three stared enviously back at her. “So how old are you? - 22, hmm 23? maybe?” she asked as she over fluttered her eyelashes and comically raised quizzical eyebrows at him. Jon looked at her and replied as quickly and as casually as he could, “forty nine” he said. She instantly pushed her hips out, clapped her hands in front of her face and threw her head back letting out a huge delighted yelp of laughter.

Okay, I know that there are about 3 instances where you'd regularly use italics in fiction: showing foreign/made-up goblidigoober words, "indicating mental thoughts" and putting stress on words being…Continue

Title Advice?

Posted by Daniel Hale on December 14, 2015 at 18:29 0 Comments

I just completed, as near as I can tell, my first book: a collection stories disguised as a novel. I do currently have a working title that I was initially happy with, BUT it may now be too obscure or inapplicable.

The title as it is now is "The Psalterdemalion." This is a combination of two of my favorite words: Psalter, which is a small book of psalms, and Tatterdemalion, which is a man dressed in multicolored rags and tatters. My thinking was that the man character, a story thief,…

On the 1st August 2015 a special night had arrived for seventy-five year old Robert Harris and his seventy-two year old wife Barbara.  Robert was nattily dressed in a blue suit and Barbara looked elegant in a long flowing red and black flowery dress. They were in the heart of the…

So I've got my stories together for my first collection, and am currently working on the connecting narrative. I haven't even thought yet how I'm gonna get this published. Gotta start thinking what I need to do.

Mark stood on a sea cliff top. A wave below roared in and sprayed out a ferocious impact. Its retreat left a glistening carpet of foamy shale. To his left, a slender figured girl appeared, dressed only in a skimpy black nightie. Her blonde hair fell over her face. Scarlet lips whispered to him,…
